Manifesto: For a Genuine Political Dialogue based on Equality, Shared Values, and Accountability between EU and Civil Society in the MENA Region

EuroMed Rights, FMAS and Legal Agenda launch a manifesto to advocate for a political dialogue founded on universal values between Civil Society in the MENA Region and the European Union.

As a new legislative term for the EU is about to begin, civil society organizations in the region have formulated recommendations highlighting priority actions to address the crisis within the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership launched in 1995. This crisis is compounded by recent decades’ challenges and exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Civil society has voiced concerns over the erosion of rule of law, attacks on freedoms and the failure of EU policies to prioritize human rights in its relations with its Southern Neighbors. In response, civil society calls on the incoming future European Parliament and European Commission to take a firm stance in upholding universal, shared values and international law. Their recommendations are structured around key priorities aimed at addressing these critical issues:

  • a political dialogue with CSOs founded on universal values,
  • sustainable & unconditional funding for independent civil society
  • shrinking space & protecting Human Rights Defenders
  • a just green transition in the MENA region
  • international law, rule of law, justice, transparency & accountability
  • women’s rights and gender justice,
  • migration and asylum policies.
