Day of CommemorAction of Missing and Deceased Persons in Migration: EuroMed Rights calls for the responsible use of new technologies in the service of human rights

On this day of 06 February 2026, EuroMed Rights joins all families who have lost loved ones in migration to pay tribute to them. This day represents a moment of remembrance for all those porté.es disparu.es or décédé.es on the move. It is also an opportunity to recall the importance of support for families by States and international organizations, as well as the need to guarantee them access to truth and justice.

In the age of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, EuroMed Rights advocates their use as tools for human rights, not as instruments of control, criminalisation or dehumanisation. These technologies can and should contribute to the search for the truth, as well as to the identification of missing or deceased persons on the move, provided that they are deployed in strict respect of fundamental rights and privacy.

In this context, EuroMed Rights publishes on 06 February 2026 a factsheet on new technologies and migrant.es disparu.es, resulting from its report entitled Study on the use of new technologies in the identification and search for missing or deceased persons in migration“.

Intended for States, international organizations and civil society actors, this publication calls for a responsible, ethical and supervised use of technological tools in order to strengthen mechanisms for tracing, identifying and supporting families.

EuroMed Rights also calls on civil society, associations, families and activists to pool their efforts and strengthen coordination. Increased cooperation is essential to ensure the effective use of these tools, with respect for the privacy and dignity of the persons concerned, and to support the search and identification of persons who have disappeared or died in migration.
