Syrian migration to Germany has almost halved since the fall of Bashar al-Assad, alongisde a decrease in asylum applications, InfoMigrants reported on 7 November 2025. According to numbers by Germany’s federal statistical office, 40,000 Syrians arrived between January and September 2025, 46.5 % less than in the same period the year before. Furthermore, 21,800 Syrians have decided to return to Syria, a 35.3% increase compared to numbers from the previous year.
During a meeting between German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul and Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa in Damaskus, the officials discussed the potential return of Syrian refugees. As reported by Arab News on 30 October 2025, Wadephul stated the Syrian government understandably wants to create the necessary conditions for the thousands of Syrians who have settled in Germany since fleeing the war. He recognised the current limitations of this possibility, citing the large-scale destruction of infrastructure in Syria and emphasised that Germany had a “special obligation” to help with reconstruction in Syria.
