  • In the Loon-Plage camp in northern France, two migrants were shot and wounded on 23 and 26 May, respectively. According to local sources, a dispute was between a migrant and a smuggler. Living conditions in the camp are becoming increasingly precarious.
  • On May 23, the Constitutional Council censured one of the provisions of the “immigration” law passed in 2023. This provision, now prohibited, allowed asylum seekers to be detained even if they were not subject to an obligation to leave the territory.

This means that if a person said to be in an irregular situation has 12 months of payslips in the last 24 months and three years of residence in France, then he or she can claim a residence permit. A list that has been long awaited and which still ignores sectors of the economy in which many “irregular” people work.
  • A new tragedy occurred in the English Channel on the night of May 20 to 21. A boat carrying 85 migrants tried to cross the sea. When the French navy intervened to rescue 10 people, a woman and a child were found dead
  • On the night of 18 to 19 May, a boat trying to cross the Channel broke up and sank, causing the death of one person and the disappearance of another. Another 200 migrants were rescued, including a mother and a child who were hospitalised.
