Malta continues its policy of omission of rescue. Between 9 May and 1st June, Alarm Phone alerted authorities on a total of 1079 migrants in distress on 5 different boats in Malta’s SAR, mostly fleeing Libya. Once again, authorities didn’t react. One boat with 150 people on board was rescued by Italian authorities and reached Lampedusa and 29 people on board of two boats were rescued by a merchant vessel.
On May 18, anational monitoring committee overseeing the health and housing conditions of detained migrants has called for an immediate overhaul of two blocks of the Ħal Far detention centre. The committee called for the appointment of an architect to inspect and report on urgent works needed to safeguard the safety of detained persons of the blocks built over 50 years ago.
On May 17, Aditus Foundation declared that the Court of Appeal delivered a second “important judgement on the status of holders of Specific Residence Authorisation (SRA)”. The cases concern Malta’s refusal to renew SRA statuses, thereby declaring migrants as undocumented despite their integration into society.
