On March 20, the European Commission launched a pilot project with Bulgaria on preventing irregular arrivals, strengthening border and migration management. The project foresees the implementation by Bulgaria of targeted tools and practices in the area of accelerated asylum procedures and effective returns. Bulgaria will be assisted by the European Commission and Home Affairs EU agencies (EUAA, Europol and Frontex), which will provide strong operational and technical support. The border between Turkey and Bulgaria is the center of the attention of European leaders since Austrian Chancellor’s proposal to allocate 2 billion euros to improve and strengthen its fences. During the negotiations of last month European Council special meeting, enhancing surveillance measures at the Bulgaria-Turkey border emerged as a key priority. Romania and Bulgaria are expecting to get approval on Schengen accession this year. Last year they were kept out of Schengen because of Austria’s concerns over illegal migration.
