End of march, an investigation by the Belgian authorities has started about a 38-years old Syrian man, accused of having participated in executions of civilians refusing to swear allegiance to the Islamic State in Palmyre. The man had left Syria in 2015. If his guild is proved, he will not have access to the refugee status anymore.
On 15 March 2023, a man was arrested in the UK for “assisting illegal immigration on the migration route between Belgium and the UK”. This is the fifth arrest in a smuggling ring bust.
On March 9, Prime minister Alexander De Croo and Asylum Migration State Secretary Nicole de Moon announced a new migration deal. Among the decisions : 700 new places created for arriving migrants by using shipping containers; returns to the countries of origin will be strenghtened and encouraged by reducing the deadline for leaving Belgian territory (from four months to one month) for people whose asylum claims was rejected; minors will not be placed in detention centers; financial assistance so that asylum seekers who have resided in these centers for more than six months can leave; family reunification will be possible for the parent who effectively takes care of the child. As a response, on 13 March 2023, a demonstration in Brussels to find an emergency solution for 50 asylum seekers. The demonstrators rejected the proposal to accelerate the return for asylum seekers whose applications was rejected.
