The statement does not necessarily reflect the stance of all the members of EuroMed Rights.
EuroMed Rights welcomes the recent announcement of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza which will bring hope and much needed relief to civilians, and urges that this long overdue agreement is enforced and applied permanently.
In over 15 months of genocide in Gaza, Palestinians have suffered all kinds of violations including mass killing, displacement, starvation and denial of basic necessities and assistance. The infrastructure system has been almost completely destroyed, forcing over two million people to survive inhumane conditions with no food, no shelter, no medical assistance and the constant fear of death.
We call on all parties and on the international community to ensure a real, permanent ceasefire and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, including food, medical supplies, and essential services, to all those in need. We equally call for the liberation of hostages and captives from both sides.
While this ceasefire offers a temporary halt of hostilities, it remains true that no sustainable peace can be achieved without justice. Violations of international humanitarian and human rights law must be thoroughly investigated, and accountability must be ensured for all perpetrators. State parties to the Internationa Criminal Court (ICC) must fully cooperate with the Court in executing arrest warrants for perpetrators of war crimes and the illegal occupation must end, in line with ICJ advisory opinion.
A lasting and just peace needs to be grounded in the elimination of the root causes of violence and in the full acknowledgement and respect for inalienable Palestinian rights, including the right to self-determination. In this process, we urge all parties to:
- Ensure a permanent ceasefire and support immediate, uninterrupted humanitarian efforts. aid must reach all affected communities without delay or obstruction, and the urgent needs of displaced families, injured civilians, and vulnerable groups must be addressed swiftly. To do so, we urge Israel’s blockade of Gaza to be lifted.
- Demand accountability and end impunity. Fully cooperate with the ICC and all relevant international judicial mechanisms to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of genocidal acts and war crimes, ensuring that victims see justice and reparations. Support access and independent monitoring of violations in Gaza.
- Address root causes. Commit to addressing the structural causes of the conflict, starting with Israel’s unlawful occupation and apartheid system. Support Palestinian right to self-determination.
Today must mark the beginning of a comprehensive effort to uphold international law and restore human rights in Gaza. Anything less risks perpetuating the cycle of violence that has continued for far too long.
