EuroMed Rights condemns escalating violence in Syria’s coastal region and calls for accountability

EuroMed Rights expresses concern over the recent escalation of violence in Syria’s coastal region, particularly in the provinces of Latakia and Tartous where over 1,018 people were killed, including 745 civilians 125 member of Syrian security forces and 148 of Assad’ loyalists. Reports indicate that clashes between armed groups, transitional government forces and other religious factions have resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacement. EuroMed Rights calls for a thorough, independent investigation into these atrocities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable under both domestic and international law.

The violence escalated on Thursday, March 6, 2025, near the city of Jableh, triggering widespread violence between the Assad’ Loyalists and the Syrian Security Forces. Thousands of Syrian Alawites have fled to Lebanon mainly to Akkar, Tripoli, and the Bekaa Valley, escaping sectarian killing. Refugees report widespread destruction in their villages, forcing entire communities to flee. Lebanese authorities and aid organizations are working to provide shelter and assistance to those affected.

The clashes resulted in thousands displaced and shortages of essential resources such as food, water, and medical care. Humanitarian organizations have called for the rapid, safe, and unimpeded access for humanitarian workers to provide life saving services and not further exacerbating the suffering of vulnerable populations.

The affected region consists of largely of Alawite and Christian communities who formed the majority of civilian casualties. Ensuring the protection of all civilians remains essential amid rising sectarian tensions.

In light of these worrying developments, EuroMed Rights calls for:

  • An immediate halt to the gross violations of international law and the protection of all civilians.
  • Ensuring the security of communities of minorities by allocating resources and taking necessary measures to protect civilians from further violence and reprisals.
  • A thorough and independent investigation into the recent killings, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable in accordance with domestic and international law.
  • Facilitating humanitarian access to affected populations by ensuring safe and unhindered aid delivery in coordination with humanitarian organizations.
  • Upholding international humanitarian law by committing to civilian protection and preventing further escalations of violence.
