EuroMed Rights is looking to recruit a Support Officer for the Middle East Unit. The position would be a one-year contract starting in July 2024 and based at the EuroMed Rights’ office in Brussels.

About EuroMed Rights

EuroMed Rights was founded in January 1997 in response to the Barcelona Declaration of November 1995 and the establishment of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (EMP). It is the coordinating body of about 68 human rights organisations and institutions as well as individuals from over 30 countries. EuroMed Rights’ organisational structure is built on a general assembly, an executive committee, working groups and a secretariat.

Rooted in civil society the Network seeks to develop and strengthen partnerships between NGOs in the EuroMed region, i.e. networking aimed at strengthening the capacity of members to act and interact within the context of the region and the Barcelona process and other EU-Arab cooperation frameworks.

Description of Tasks 

The Support Officer will contribute to the implementation of EuroMed Rights’ country programs in the Middle East, with a current focus on Palestine/Israel, Egypt and Turkey under the supervision of the Head of Middle East Unit. The goal is to expand these programs to encompass various countries, including Lebanon. This effort is directed towards advancing the organization’s overarching strategy and objectives. The Support Officer will work closely with the other support officers in the team, program coordinators, and relevant departments to ensure effective implementation.

Coordination and Logistics:

  • Coordinate logistics for Middle East programs, including meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Manage travel arrangements and accommodations for team members.
  • Assist in preparing and distributing materials for meetings and events.

Grants and Financial Support:

  • Identify funding opportunities and assist in grant proposal development.
  • Support financial documentation processes in collaboration with the Finance Department.

Networking and Advocacy:

  • Maintain and enhance relationships with network members and other NGOs.
  • Support advocacy initiatives and participate in relevant workshops and forums.
  • Represent the organization at key events and meetings as required.

Communication and Reporting:

  • Develop and implement communication strategies.
  • Compile and prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor and evaluate project progress and impact.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: University degree in international relations, law, human rights, development studies, or a related field. Other similar qualifications may also be considered.
  • Work Experience: A strong interest in human rights protection, ideally with a minimum of 2 years of proven experience in NGOs focused on the EU/Middle East region.
  • Event Support: Demonstrated experience in organizing and supporting events, workshops, and advocacy missions.
  • Language Proficiency: Excellent command of written and spoken English and French; additional knowledge of Arabic is a valuable asset but not a prerequisite.
  • Reporting Skills: Solid experience in donor reporting, including familiarity with Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) processes.
  • Personal Qualities: Self-motivated and well-organized, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to work independently under pressure.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, with an interest in digital security and IT/Communication tools.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Grant and Financial Experience: Familiarity with the grant application process and financial procedures, including procurement of goods and services.
  • Regional Knowledge: Understanding of the socio-political landscape in the Middle East.
  • Additional Language Skills: Practical knowledge of Turkish will be an asset.
  • EU Institutions Knowledge: Awareness of the functioning of EU institutions and EU foreign policy, especially concerning its Southern Neighborhood.
  • Media Relations: Experience in the Euro-Mediterranean media landscape and building press relations.
