On 29 February 2024, Frontex Director Hans Leijtens announced the deployment of more than 500 officers to the Bulgarian-Turkish border during the month of March. The statement comes at a time when European border guards are accused of colluding with Bulgarian forces in multiple violations of migrants’ rights.
On 26 February 2024, the Balkan Insight published an investigation in which it is demonstrated how asylum seekers are insulted, robbed, beaten, attacked by police dogs and pushed back to Turkey by Bulgarian border guards involved in Frontex operations. This evidence, taken from internal documents of the European agency, shows that this state xenophobia and abuse of power were ignored in favour of Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area.
