  • On March 01, 2024, ECRE noted an increase in the arrival of Syrian refugees on the Balkan route. The devastation of the February 2023 earthquake, growing food insecurity, military occupation by foreign powers, as well as the repression of Bashar al-Assad’s regime are some of the factors explaining these displacements.
  • On February 22, 2024, the Albanian parliament voted in favour of the new migration agreement with Italy. This law will allow the subcontracting, each year, of the files of 36,000 migrants wishing to reach Italy through this non-EU member Balkan country. This is a further weakening of the right to international protection.
  • On February 21, 2024, the EU announced the investment of €6.4 million in Bosnia and Herzegovina for “border and migration management”.  Sarajevo’s recent rapprochement with Frontex is part of its EU accession process.
  • In February 2024, according to a report published by the NGO Collective Aid, a record of more than 34,000 migrants entered Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2023. Faced with this phenomenon, Sarajevo has responded with an aggressive policy of refoulement and hostile attitude against these displaced people.
