To improve Lebanese and refugee access to sustainable energy, UNHCR and InterSos (a partner humanitarian organization) installed 350 solar streetlights in Sid el-Bauchrieh (in Mount Lebanon) on 14 March. The objective is to improve the security of the inhabitants. This project is part of a series of initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of Lebanon’s energy crisis for Lebanese and refugees.
On 11 March, a fire broke out in a Syrian refugee camp in Anjar (in the Bekaa). Although the fire was quickly controlled, one person was injured. The cause of the fire is unknown. A previous fire took place at the end of February in a refugee camp in Ersal, resulting in the death of a mother and her son.
On March 8th 2023, the municipality of Majidiyé-Mari (south of Lebanon) officiallyasked its inhabitants to stay away from the surrounding refugee camps, suspecting a cholera epidemic. The recent reappearance of cholera in Lebanon is fueling discriminatory practices against Syrian refugees.
