  • On 12 October, the MSF ship Geo Barents resumed its operations at sea after the Genoa court lifted all restrictions.
  • On 11 October, 37 Syrian refugees in Lebanon were evacuated through a humanitarian corridor in Italy. Another dozen refugees are expected to be evacuated from Lebanon to Italy in the coming days.
  • On 8 October, the European Court of Human Rights condemned Cyprus for intercepting two Syrians at sea and pushing them back to Lebanon without giving them the opportunity to apply for asylum. Cyprus must pay 22,000 euros in compensation to the two men.
  • On 4 October, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Member States are not permitted to declare only some parts of a country safe, and that the designation of a third country as a safe country of origin must cover its entire territory. Furthermore, the Court ruled that Member States cannot reject an asylum application on the grounds of a “safe third country” concept if they have established that the asylum seeker will not be permitted to enter the territory of the designated safe country in question.
