On 13 February 2024, the Italian Senate ratified the migration policy agreement with Albania. If approved by the Albanian parliament, the new law will lead to the construction of two centres in Albania for the outsourcing of asylum procedures, thereby circumventing Italy’s international commitments towards asylum seekers.
Protection Rights at Borders (PRAB) published its 2023 report. Thanks to the work of the partner organizations, the initiative reported 28,609 illegal pushbacks in the European borders over the hole year. 8,403 of these violent pushbacks concerned the period between September and December.
On 09 February 2024, Ocean Viking carried out a rescue operation, enabling 261 people to disembark in the port of Brindisi. Reassured, these people returned to relative safety on dry land.
On 26 January 2024, after being alerted by the Sea Bird 1 aircraft of the NGO Sea Watch, the Ocean Viking rescued 71 people who were adrift off the coast of Libya. The migrants were able to disembark in the port of Livorno.
