According to the NGO Refugee Support Aegean, 3,769 people are living in deplorable conditions in the saturated “Controlled Access Closed Center” of Samos. The majority are Syrian, Afghan, Palestinian and African refugees.
On the weekend of 10 February, the Greek coastguard carried out a number of rescue operations, including one to the south of the island of Crete. According to official sources, 84 migrants were rescued. Two people on board have been charged with human trafficking.
A damning report by Frontex‘s Fundamental Rights Committee has confirmed that the Greek authorities failed to take the necessary measures to rescue the boat in distress when it sank in Pylos in June 2023. More than 600 people were killed as a result of the failure to assist a person in danger.
