According to the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, a record number of more than 1,300 people perished or disappeared during their crossing of the Central Mediterranean from Tunisia in 2023.
On 15 February 2024, 9 bodies were found in a boat near the town of Zarzis. It is estimated that the boat was carrying around 50 migrants who wanted to reach Europe.
On 06 February 2024, a group of relatives of 40 missing Tunisian migrants demonstrated in Tunis. These young people, driven by precariousness, had attempted to cross the Mediterranean on 11 January 2024 before their disappearance.
On 05 February 2024, at least 17 Tunisian migrants, including a five-year-old child, were reported missing. Their boat had left the north of the country, increasing the record number of dead or disappearances from the Tunisian coast.
Fleeing civil war, at least 13 Sudanese asylum seekers have died after their boat capsized off the Tunisian coast. The search for 27 missing persons continues.
