On February 27, 2024, the Sea-Eye 4 conducted its first rescue operation of 57 people who were in distress in an overcrowded boat in the Maltese search area. Some migrants lost consciousness and were transported by helicopter to hospitals. Two individuals died during the flight.
On February 23, 2024, a new tragedy occurred in the south of the Maltese coast. At least 5 people died and 8 were injured when their boat, coming from Libya, capsized. The survivors, about 30 migrants from East Africa, Egypt and Syria, were taken to hospital or placed in the Safi detention centre.
