  • In 2024, expulsions increased significantly by 26.7%, reaching 21,601 removals, including 12,856 forced deportations (+9.7%). In contrast, regularizations decreased by 10%, with 31,250 people regularized, marking the first decline since 2020.On Friday, January 17th, 68 people aboard a boat were rescued and brought ashore at Calais. The rescued individuals were then assisted by emergency services.
  • On January 16th, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that France had violated the European Convention on Human Rights in the case of A.C. v. France. A.C., a young Guinean who arrived in 2020, claimed to be a minor, but French authorities disputed his age after an age assessment. Left without support and homeless, he was particularly vulnerable during the COVID-19 lockdown. The ECHR found that the French authorities had not respected the necessary procedural safeguards, particularly in assessing the age of unaccompanied minors, and that there was insufficient recourse or information about administrative decisions. However, the Court did not find that the treatment conditions violated Article 3.
  • On January 24th, Minister Retailleau sent a new circular to the prefects outlining tougher conditions for regularizing undocumented migrants. The circular details the government’s objective to combat irregular immigration, making it increasingly difficult to apply for a residence permit. Additionally, the required duration of stay to obtain a permit will be extended from at least five years to at least seven years.
