In 2024, there was a 25% increase in the number of people who crossed the channel and a record number of deaths notably due to the condition of the journey : people were mainly crossing the channel in small boats.
On the first week of February, the UK government has unveiled a draft law aimed at reinforce the security at the borders and repealing various elements of its previous migration and asylum policies.
The UK government has reached a controversial deal with Tunisia to address migration, raising concerns over its focus on border security and smuggling operations rather than the root causes of migration itself. The emphasis on high-tech surveillance and cracking down on smuggling operations risks overshadowing the underlying humanitarian crisis faced by migrants, ultimately failing to address the socio-economic factors driving their dangerous journeys.
