On the 17th of December 2024, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen travelled to Ankara for an official meeting. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has expressed his desire to strengthen cooperation with the EU. The discussions focused on the fall of the Assad regime and its implications. In a press statement, Von der Leyen announced the transfer of an additional €1 billion to Turkey for health, education and returns of Syrian refugees. She added that each return must be “voluntary, safe and dignified”.
