On 30 September, a trial began in Lille against 20 people smugglers who face up to 10 years in prison. For each crossing of 50 asylum seekers in boats with a capacity of just a dozen, the smugglers were paid around 100,000 euros.
On 25 September, the French authorities decided to step up maritime surveillance in northern France. An additional maritime brigade has been patrolling the Somme coast in northern France for several days.
On 24 September, the new Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, presented his policy on migration. The Prime Minister plans to tighten migration laws, abolish state medical aid for undocumented migrants, reintroduce the offence of illegal residence, sign agreements with North African countries to speed up deportations and even reintroduce border controls.
On 18 September, Amnesty International France published a new report highlighting how migrant women are victims of double violence when they want to file a complaint about sexual violence. They are often denied the right to do so, even though they have the legal right to do so regardless of their administrative status. Interpretation services are almost never available for women who do not speak French, and expulsion from France is often ordered.
