On 16 September, RFI revealed that the so-called “Algerian route” is becoming increasingly utilised by migrants. Thus far in 2024, 8,000 individuals have arrived in Spain. Half of them go undetected on arrival, while the other half are either rescued or perish at sea. It is estimated that at least 500 people die on this route each year.
