The referendum held on 8 and 9 June in Italy, aimed at facilitating naturalisation and protecting workers, failed. In fact, just under 30% of voters turned out at the polls, whereas at least 50% was required for the result to be valid. The ultra-conservative Giorgia Meloni had called on people not to vote.
Over the weekend of 17 and 18 May, three humanitarian ships intervened to rescue boats in distress in the central Mediterranean. A total of 376 people, including women and children, have been rescued.
Supported by Giorgia Meloni’s government, the Italian Parliament adopted a new decree on 20th May restricting access to Italian nationality for foreigners. Whereas it was previously sufficient to prove a family relationship with an Italian citizen who lived in Italy after 1861, it is now necessary to demonstrate direct filiation with an Italian-born parent or grandparent in order to be eligible for naturalisation.
