  • The referendum held on 8 and 9 June in Italy, aimed at facilitating naturalisation and protecting workers, failed. In fact, just under 30% of voters turned out at the polls, whereas at least 50% was required for the result to be valid. The ultra-conservative Giorgia Meloni had called on people not to vote.
  • Over the weekend of 17 and 18 May, three humanitarian ships intervened to rescue boats in distress in the central Mediterranean. A total  of 376 people, including women and children, have been rescued.
  •  Supported by Giorgia Meloni’s government, the Italian Parliament adopted a new decree on 20th May  restricting access to Italian nationality for foreigners. Whereas it was previously sufficient to prove a family relationship with an Italian citizen who lived in Italy after 1861, it is now necessary to demonstrate direct filiation with an Italian-born parent or grandparent in order to be eligible for naturalisation.
