  • At the end of May, the Greek Minister for Migration announced an official visit to Libya in the coming weeks, with the aim of negotiating an agreement with Tripoli, similar to the one concluded by Italy a few years ago. Like the European Union, Greece aims to prevent migrants from reaching its territory.
  • On 29 May, the Minister of Migration announced the tightening of immigration laws. It now plans to never regularise people who are “illegally” in Greece. In addition, people who arrive “irregularly” in Greece may be subject to a prison sentence of up to 5 years.
  • During the weekend of 23 to 25 May, more than 500 migrants were rescued by the Greek authorities off the island of Crete. Originally from Sudan, Egypt and Bangladesh, they had left Libya.
