On 26 November, the 8 remaining men living on the Bibby Stockholm were relocated. This barge was a measure taken by the previous government to reduce the cost of asylum accommodation by housing asylum seekers on barges.
On 14 November, the network No Accommodation declared that the numbers of refugees living on the street has never been higher in the UK. Between April 2023 and March 2024, 1,941 people granted refugee status in the UK were housed by charities, compared to 977 the previous year.
On 11 November, Privacy International revealed that since 2019-2020, the UK government has been using an AI-based system to facilitate decision-making about migrants and asylum seekers who are likely to be deported. This practice raises a number of concerns, not least the confidentiality of the data collected, but also the fact that officials who disagreed with the AI’s decision would have to justify their decision at length, encouraging them to follow the AI’s recommendations.
