  • On the night June 29th to 30th, a boat sank off the island of Lampedusa. 87 people were rescued, but one woman lost her life and at least 5 people are missing.
  • The Italian court of cassation has expressed “doubts of constitutionality” over the memorandum of understanding with Albania on migrants, active since last October. The court’s report, dated June 18 but first reported on by The Manifesto on June 29, questions the protocol’s compatibility with “the constitution, but also with international and European Union law”.
  • According to a report by Italian media outlet Altreconomia, published on June 23rd, Italy made its first repatriation from Albania to Cairo on May 9th. Five people of Egyptian origin, who were detained in the Detention Centre for Repatriation (CPR) were deported. According to Schiavone, a member of ASGI (the Association for the Study on Legal Affairs on Migration), Italy is violating Article 13 of its Constitution by conducting police operations without judicial oversight. Italy could also lead the way in the implementation of “return hubs”.
  • On June 12th, the European Court of Human Rights exonerated Italy of any responsibility for helping migrants intercepted in the central Mediterranean return to Libya. Once again, the European Union is turning a blind eye to violations that are widely documented.
  • Restrictive Italian policies, including the Piantedosi Decree, have drastically limited the ability of rescue ships to provide life-saving assistance. A report published by Médecins Sans Frontières on June 12th explains how these policies led to the shutdown of the Geo Barents ship in December 2024.
