On 3 April 2024, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides appealed for EU help in the face of the upsurge in migrants arriving on the island. In particular, it calls for increased pressure on the Lebanese authorities to manage “migratory flows“. Moreover, Cyprus is calling for part of Syrian territory to be considered as a safe place for the return of refugees.
Between 31 March and 2 April, more than 500 migrants, including women and unaccompanied minors, survived their crossing from the Levantine coast. They arrived in a dozen boats off the coast of Cyprus and were rescued by the Cypriot Coast Guard and fishing boats.
