  • On March 1, the body of a migrant was found off the coast of Ceuta, and another person was reported missing after being swept away by a wave. That day, Spanish authorities rescued ten migrants, including seven minors, who were attempting to swim to Spain from Moroccan beaches. 
  • On February 12 the Canary Islands Parliament accepted a proposal by deputies to set up an emergency hospital in EL Hierro to provide immediate and appropriate care for migrants. The project still needs the approval of the regional government.
  • On February 11, several rescue operations were carried out off El Hierro, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, rescuing 504 migrants. However, one person was found dead when his pirogue capsized, and two people are still missing. 
  • On February 11, Pedro Sanchez’s Socialist government decided to grant residence and work permits to 25,000 foreigners. This decision follows the devastating floods which mainly affected the Valencian Community. As a result of this natural disaster, many people were unable to meet the requirements for legal residence in Spain.
