On 17 October, a representative of the Greek Refugee Council criticized the location for the newest refugee camp, citing its remoteness. The new reception camp in Lesbos will have the capacity to accommodate up to 10,000 individuals and will operate as a closed camp with stringent access controls.
On 16 October, a boat carrying 100 migrants sank off the coast of Crete, leaving at least one dead and two missing. The people had set off from Libya and said they had paid up to 10,000 euros for the journey.
On 15 October, two women and two children aged three and six years old lost their lives near the Greek island of Kos after the driver of the boat attempted to evade the border guards and 10 people were thrown from the boat.
On 13 October, the Aegean Boat Report revealed that 1572 people arrived in the Aegean islands between 7 and 13 October. In the same period, 66 boats (1671 people) were pushed back by the police.
