  • On 20 October, a boat carrying 231 people arrived in the Canary Islands. This is the largest number of people ever recorded on a boat in the Canary Islands.
  • On 13 October, three migrants were found dead on a boat off the coast of southern Spain. The 29 other men on board were rescued. 
  • On 10 October, the Spanish interior minister asked Frontex to seek permission to patrol the waters off Mauritania, Senegal and Gambier in order to “save lives” on the dangerous route from the African continent to the nearby Canary Islands.
  • On 10 October, the European Court of Human Rights condemned the Spanish authorities for failing to investigate serious allegations of human trafficking made by a Nigerian woman.
  • On 9 October, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared that he would ask the European Commission to bring forward the entry into force of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum by one year.
  • On 9 October, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced measures to facilitate the integration of migrants into the Spanish labor market. These include the recognition of academic qualifications for temporary workers and the simplification of contracts as part of a new labor migration program.
