In the last few weeks, Egypt hosted several high-profile meetings centered around migration. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani traveled to Egypt to discuss migrationon March 14. Tajani, who had already visited Cairo in January, described Egypt as “a key country in the fight against illegal immigration” and voiced hope that “on the issue of migration Egypt doesn’t become the new Tunisia.” On March 13, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Federiksen to discuss irregular migration, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. During the meeting, El-Sissi stressed that his country was “keen not to be a crossing point” for people looking to get to Europe illegally. Between Merch 26-28 Egypt also received EU Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas, whose visit aimed at defining concrete political and operational steps to address challenges linked to migration management.
