  • On March 31, during a summit on organized crime related to immigration, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on around ten countries to join forces in dismantling “once and for all” the human smuggling networks. In reality, the Prime Minister is seeking to prevent migrants from reaching the United Kingdom, particularly cracking down on asylum seekers arriving from France via the English Channel. 
  • The hearings of the British commission of inquiry into the shipwreck of 24 November 2021 ended on 27 March, highlighting the shortcomings of the French and British rescue services. At the same time, a criminal trial took place in France, where seven soldiers were accused of failing to assist a person in danger. A report with recommendations will soon be submitted to the British Secretary of State for Transport. 
  • On 6 March, Middle East Eye published an article revealing that the UK had launched an advertising campaign targeting residents of Iraq’s Kurdish region. Broadcast in the Sorani Kurdish dialect by the Home Office, this online campaign aims to dissuade residents from seeking asylum in the UK by warning that such applications would be in vain.
