An anti-migrant project, called “Wuambushu” is planned in Mayotte from April 2023, for three months. It consists of (i) the destruction of informal housing where migrants live through the use of bulldozers by the authorities and (ii) the return of migrants to their countries of origin (mainly the Comoros). This operation was initiated by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, who obtained presidential approval for the project in February during a Defence Council meeting.
On the weekend of 8 and 9 April 2023, 404 migrants left the coast of Northern France to reach England. 287 people managed to reach the British coast. A further 117 people found themselves in difficulties and were picked up at sea by the French authorities. They were brought to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer.
Two migrants’ ships were rescued by the French navy in the Channel on April 5th2023. The first one arrived near Boulogne-sur-Mer around 9AM and held 28 people. A little later, a French Navy vessel rescued another boat in difficulty and recovered 13 people.
On April 4th 2023, 60 migrants were rescued on a beach on the Opal Coast, according to La Voix du Nord. Two women, one of them pregnant, and a two-year-old child were taken to hospital by the fire brigade.
Since 4th April 2023, more than 200 non-accompanied minors occupied an abandoned school in Paris (XVIth). They demand that the authorities take charge of them so that they stop living in insecurity on the streets. For several months, migrant camps have been dismantled by the police in the capital.
On April 1st, in the camp of Mardyck (near Dunkirk), one migrant man has been hurt after violent fights. The following day, another migrant man has been hurt and driven to the hospital. The prognosis of these two men is not critical. However, these violent clashes highlight the difficult living conditions of migrants in the camps and the context of violence. In February, a 30-years-old was shod dead in the same camp.
