Lighthouse Reports and its partners investigated and proved, through leaked WhatsAppp communications, that high ranking Croatian officials were fully aware of a pushback operation called “Koridor”. The unofficial WhatsApp group named “OA Koridor II-Zapad” was used by Croatian border police to share sensitive information and photographs between August 2019 and February 2020.Croatia receives a significant amount of money to fight irregular migration and human trafficking. A recent ECRE and PICUM paper stresses that all actions supported financially by the EU must comply with the Charter of Fundamental Rights and that the Commission can stop funding when fundamental rights are violated.
The independent movement No Name Kitchen denounced a new illegal phenomenon against people on the move, occurring in the border between the EU and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Indeed, people are beingtaken by bus from Croatia to Lipa camp or Borici camp, which are funded with EU money. According to the testimonies No Name Kitchen obtained (i) many of them received an expulsion paper saying that they are not allowed to enter the European Economic Area for one year, (ii) they didn’t have either lawyers nor translators to help them.
