  • On 18 April, the first meeting between the Swedish Presidency and the European Parliament took place to negotiate the new regulation on the asylum procedure, according to a message from Yvla Johansson on her Twitter account. Previously, in the end of March 2023, the EU Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) had adopted its position on the Screening Regulation, the Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (RAMM), the Asylum Procedures Regulation (APR), and the Crisis Regulation, opening the phase of negotiations with the Council.
  • EU asylum relocation system presented in June 2022 struggles to deliver. It aimed at reducing migrant arrival pressure after Search And Rescue Operations. However, according to the 2023 figures, just over 300 asylum seekers were relocated from Italy suggesting that “The figures do not augur well for future solidarity efforts among EU States”. 
  • European health experts are calling for better promotion of migrant health because of an important rise of diphtheria among them in Europe. According to them, a more coordinated policy should be implemented on that topic. Diphtheria is a respiratory disease than can be transmitted quickly to non-vaccinated people. If the infection is rare in Europe (thanks to the vaccination), it can be fatal if it’s untreated.  An important increase of the cases has been registered in Germany according to Germany’s Robert Koch Institute.
