  • On April 11, the Gambian Foreign Ministry announced that nearly 250 people had been arrested at sea by the Moroccan Navy. The first boat had left Gambia on 23 March and was carrying 161 people, including 148 Gambians. It was arrested on 31 March. The second boat had left Gambia on 24 March and was carrying around 100 migrants, including 48 Gambians. It was arrested on 1 April. IOM told InfoMigrantsthat departures from Gambia were rather rare because of the danger of the crossing. However, these two crossings in two days raise questions about a potential new migration route.
  • On April 8, a boat sank off the coast of Guelmin, killing 11 migrants. The boat was heading for the Canary Islands. Among these 11 people, there were 8 Moroccans (7 men and 1 woman) and three sub-Saharans (a couple and a two-year-old child).
