  • According to the NGO Alarme Phone Sahara, on April 19, Algeria expelled 1,140 migrants — a sharp increase since the beginning of these operations. Abandoned in the desert area known as “Point Zero,” the individuals were forced to walk on foot across the desert to the town of Assamaka. The organization reports that over 4,000 migrants have been pushed back since the beginning of April.

Between 200 and 300 migrants work there every day in inhumane conditions, while waiting to continue their migratory journey to Europe. Nabila Moussaoui, a migration specialist, points out that migrants from sub-Saharan Africa “are invisible, but they are the main workforce in this sector”.
