  • Four migrants, including a Sudanese woman, died off southern Crete after their boat capsized on the 21st of February 2026. Twenty other migrants were rescued, including four minors, and at least 30 remain missing. The wooden boat had left Tobruk, Libya, and capsized when passengers shifted suddenly while trying to climb ladders from a commercial ship dispatched to assist them.
  • On the 3rd of February 2026 ,a migrant boat reportedly collided with a Greek coast guard vessel near the island of Chios. The incident resulted in the deaths of 15 Afghan nationals, while 26 individuals, including 11 minors, were rescued. Accounts of the collision differ considerably between eyewitnesses and the statements issued by the Greek coast guard. An investigation has been initiated to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the event. Several autopsy reports indicated the presence of chest injuries, and only one death was formally attributed to drowning; however, that case was also associated with cranial and brain trauma. The ongoing criminal investigation is expected to place significant emphasis on the autopsy findings.
