Arrivals to Lampedusa have reached a new peak, with almost 500 migrants disembarking from 10 boats between 8 and 10 September as reported by ANSA. Three migrants were transferred to medical facilities for treatment due to hydrocarbon poisoning. Two corpses were recovered from one of the boats, the cause of death may also be hydrocarbon poisoning. As of 10 September, there were 1,420 migrants on Lampedusa, the highest number in months.
As reported by ANSA on 9 September 2025, Italy’s Court of Cassation – the country’s highest court of appeal – ruled that migrants cannot be held in detention for up to 48 hours and instead must be released immediately if their detention has not been validated. This ruling stands against a decree from March 28 which allowed for measures like the 48 hour detention in an effort to ‘fight irregular migration’. The Court of Cassation ruled that these measures are contrary to the Constitution and necessitate evaluation by the Constitutional Court.
As reported by ANSA on 21 August 2025, three migrants have been reported missing in the Strait of Sicily after jumping out of their boat into the water to gain the attention of another vessel to seek help. The rest of the boat’s passengers, 49 people, were brought to Lampedusa by the Italian coast guard.
At least 26 migrants have died in a shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa on 13th August 2025. According to reports by migrants, two boats had departed from Libya, with passengers transferring to the second one when the first filled with water. The boat later capsized. 60 people were rescued and brought to Lampedusa.
On July 31 2025, the ARCI organization and Circoli Rifugio successfully welcomed 200 people from Afghanistan to Italy thanks to several operations carried out within the framework of humanitarian corridors.
