  • On 15 March, a fire broke out in a migrant camp in Tiznit, killing a mother and her young daughter. Several people were hospitalized with burns, while others lost much of their belongings. The AMDH (Moroccan Association for Human Rights) called on “the Moroccan State to respect and implement the international agreements signed by Morocco for the protection and accommodation of sub-Saharan migrants”.
  • The European Commissioner, Magnus Brunner, recently announced a revision of the list of “safe third countries” and it seems that Morocco could be part of it because of its geographical position and its role in migratory flows to Europe. This revision is causing great concern among civil society organisations who consider that the concept of “safe third countries” goes against the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, which provides for the individual examination of each asylum application.
  • On March 12, thirteen migrants, rescued by a Moroccan fishing vessel, were disembarked in Dakhla after drifting for about twenty days at sea. Their boat, which left Mauritania at the end of February for the Canary Islands, sank, causing the death of at least 70 people
  • On March 11, Senegal’s National Assembly passed a law allowing the President of the Republic to ratify a convention between Senegal and Morocco. The aim of this convention is to help migrants and facilitate the mutual transfer of convicted persons between the two countries. Some MPs have questioned the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yacine Fall, about the assistance provided for Senegalese minors detained in Spain as well as for the 400 Senegalese imprisoned in Mauritania.
