The EU has issued private warnings to the U.K. government against any attempt to bypass decisions by the European Court of Human Rights in order to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, multiple senior diplomats have said.
The NGOs Human Rights Network, Asylum Aid and the Helen Bamber Foundation have published a report revealing that at least 867 separated minors were considered adults by the UK Home Office in 2022. Their age was not assessed and they were given an ordinary date of birth. These minors were therefore sent to hotels alongside adults or to detention centres, where they are exposed to significant violence. NB: This practice of raising the age of minors without verifying it is not new.
On 26 April 2023, Suella Braverman warned that migrants from Sudan would be considered illegal and sent back to Rwanda under the proposed Illegal Migration Bill. The Home Secretary ruled out any safe and legal route for asylum seekers from Sudan to find refuge in the UK. This has been done in the case of Ukraine, or Afghanistan, over the past two years.
