  • On March 22, after five months of investigation, the Algerian authorities announced that they dismantled a network smuggling migrant to Europe. 9 Algerians and 6 Syrians were arrested. According to the Algerian police, this network was smuggling migrants from Syria and Lebanon to Libya and then to Algeria. They were transferred to Oran, a strategic location before crossing the Mediterranean. 
  • On March 20, 2023, at least 9 migrants lost their lives when their boat sank off the coast of Skikda (eastern Algeria). 8 migrants are still missing and only 2 people have been rescued. The migrants came from the cities of Skikda and Guelma. Four migrants from Algeria were found dead off the coast of Sardinia at the end of November. 
  • According to MSF, 4677 migrants arrived into Assamaka, in the northern Niger, between January 11th and March 3rd 2023. They come from Algeria and have been abandoned in the desert without access to shelter, protection, healthcare.  MSF condemns appalling conditions for migrants abandoned in Assamaka
