CLICK TO REGISTER

Agenda:

10:00 – 10:30: Opening and keynote speech

  • Opening remarks by Wadih Al-Asmar, EuroMed Rights President
  • Keynote by Professor Eric Komlavi Hahonou, Roskilde University, Denmark, on Race and Anti-Racism Activism in post-slavery North Africa
  • Moderator: Theodora Christou, EuroMed Rights Executive Committee member

10:30 – 11:30: Panel I – Engaging with the new anti-racist movement in Europe

This session will look at how human rights defenders and CSOs, based on both shores of the Mediterranean, can engage with the emerging anti-racist movements and activism in Europe. This emergence is both encouraging and challenging, on one hand it offers a potential avenue for common action, on the other hand the nature of the anti-racist movement, combined with radical calls, occasionally challenges the collaboration with more reform-oriented human rights NGOs.

  • Juliana Santos Wahlgren, Senior Advocacy Officer – Acting Director, European Network Against Racism (ENAR)
  • Johan Friestedt, Executive Secretary of the Council of Europe’s European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI)
  • Respondent: Filippo Miraglia, Head of Social, Immigration and International Department, Vice-President, Associazione Ricreativa e Culturale Italiana (ARCI)
  • Moderator: Catherine Teule, EuroMed Rights Vice-President

11.45-12:45: Panel II – Supporting anti-racist activism in the South/East Mediterranean

This session will discuss how the young anti-racist movement in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region could benefit from the experience of the early generations of human rights activists in coining principles such as the right to equal treatment, justice and freedom. This cross-fertilizing exchange could lead to a series of concrete proposals including reviews of inbuilt structures of racist oppression in the legislation, as well as administrative and social practices across the region.

  • Salma Sakr, Advocacy Manager at Anti-Racism Movement (ARM), Lebanon
  • Amina Bouayeche, President of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), Morocco
  • Respondent: Henda Oueslati, Executive Committee member of the National Body for the Protection of Human Trafficking
  • Moderator: Hamdi Shaqqura, EuroMed Rights Executive Committee member

12:45-13:00: Closing remarks

  • Rasmus Alenius Boserup, EuroMed Rights Executive Director
  • Moderator: Jamila Sayouri, EuroMed Rights Executive Committee member
