In April 2020, the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women put out a global call for submissions on the increase of violence against women during the COVID-19 crisis.
With the help of members and organisations in Italy (Di.R.e), Jordan (Mizan for Law and SIGI/JO), Morocco (AMDH and ADFM) and Tunisia (BEITY), EuroMed Rights’ Women’s Rights and Gender Justice Programme sent a compiled submission to the UN in order to support and reinforce each of the national reports.
Although the reality currently looks somewhat bleak on both sides of the Mediterranean, these submissions will inform part of the Special Rapporteur’s report to the UN General Assembly in October and EuroMed Rights hopes that this will serve as a wake-up call to governments that real and concrete action must be taken to end all forms of violence against women and girls.
