Around 66,300 attempts to reach Italy by sea were recorded in 2025, roughly the same as 2024.
Italy detained a humanitarian rescue vessel operated by SOS Humanity on Friday, 13 February 2026, following a mission in which it rescued 33 migrants at sea. The measure follows reports that the Italian government intends to further limit humanitarian operations in the Mediterranean, including proposals to introduce naval blockades under a new immigration bill. The impoundment of the vessel has led to a 60-day detention order and a €10,000 fine.
As many as 1000 people may be missing at sea following the storms caused by Cyclone Harry on the 20^th of January 2026.
