As reported by newsbook Malta on 18 September 2025, Maltese Nationalist Party MP Albert Buttigieg has harshly criticized his government for deporting three Ethiopian men who had been living in Malta for 18 years. The politician argued that the government “made a show, a parade with them, to please whoever thought they were a burden on Malta,” even though the men had been fully integrated into Maltese society. He highlighted the double-standard of Malta’s economy being built on exploiting migrant labor while espousing a narrative of xenophobia.
