  • More than 1,200 migrants arrived in the UK in 18 small boats during the first week of March, with no uncontrolled landings recorded.  
  • 17 March 2026: 2 Ukrainian men were sentenced to 5 and 6 years of prison in the UK after running a yacht-based migrant smuggling operation across the English Channel. Authorities, including the National Crime Agency, intercepted their boat carrying 5 migrants. The smugglers charged tens of thousands of pounds per trip, falsely presenting the journey as “luxury”.   
  • Under the “one in, one out” deal, the UK returned 377 migrants to France and accepted 380, far below its target and covering only a small share of arrivals.  
  • The UK is facing arbitration in The Hague after Rwanda sued for £100 million over a scrapped migrant resettlement deal, which the UK says is no longer payable.  
  • Plans to house 300 asylum seekers at Cameron Barracks in Inverness are delayed over a dispute on licensing requirements. No arrivals have been reported. The site is part of the UK government’s strategy to reduce reliance on costly hotels, which a 2025 report found tripled asylum housing costs to £15.3 billion.
