  • On July 16, a high-level Mauritania-Spain summit took place. Pedro Sanchez met with his counterpart Mohamed Ould Ghazouani during his third visit in less than two years. While agreements to reduce the number of migrants arriving in the Canary Islands are strongly criticized by civil society, the Spanish government continues to pursue a policy that goes against the interests and rights of African populations.  
  • On the 15th of July, the Moroccan community in the Spanish town of Torre Pacheco has called for calm as the town sees “some of the worst unrest in the country’s recent times”, Reuters reported. This happens after four days of anti-immigrant protests by fascist groups in Torre Pacheco. 
  • Spain has surpassed Germany as the EU’s top asylum-seeker destination. The Financial times article, has cited an unpublished report by the EU Agency for Asylum which indicates that this is a consequence of the reduced number of Syrians applying for asylum in the EU after the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime.
