LATEST UPDATES

13/06/2025 – 03/07/2025

  • On 30 June, the Spanish government announced that the 827 unaccompanied minors currently in the Canary Islands who are receiving international protection will soon be integrated into the national reception network. Transfers will begin in early August.
  • According to an Infomigrants article published on June 27th, the Canary Islands’ migration route has become even more dangerous as a result of a change in the route. In order to avoid controls in Mauritania and Senegal, boats are departing more and more from Guinea, making the journey longer, and therefore riskier.
  • According to data released by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior on June 16th, 11,284 people arrived to the Canary Islands by boat between January 1st and June 15th, 2025. These numbers represent a significant decrease compared to the same period in 2023, when there were 18,984 arrivals.
  • According to a report published by CEAR (Comisión Española de Ayuda al Refugiado) on 16 June, Spain granted international protection to only 18.5% of the 167,366 people who applied in 2024. It has now the lowest rate of asylum recognition among the Member States of the European Union.
  • On Tuesday, June 17th, Abderrahim Akkouch, a man of Moroccan origin, was suffocated to death by a police officer in Torrejón de Ardoz. His murder sparked the gathering of dozens to protest racism and political violence. The police officer responsible for Abderrahim’s death was detained  on charges for “reckless homicide” on Wednesday, June 18th, and released on probation on Thursday, June 19th. EuroMed Rights issued a statement on Abderrahim’s death on 25 June.
